Quick Hack for pinch point on the 5th Gen RAM 1500

This nasty bugger right here has bitten many of us here at CravenSpeed.

As 5th Gen RAM owners will know, this lock plunger drops down as the doors lock automatically when you begin to drive. A convenient feature, but it can be a nasty surprise in the right circumstances.

As you set out for your drive, you might find yourself using the top of the door panel as an armrest. Those that do will be in for quite a surprise when the plunger drops. Several of us have experienced a painful pinch from the plunger and being us, we knew we had to do something to prevent being bitten by the RAM.

Upon initial investigation, we quickly realized that you can simply unscrew it!

With the plunger out, it was obvious that we would need to do something to fill in the hole that remained.

After some quick measuring the light bulb went off.

We were pretty certain that we already had a plastic push-in plug that just might fit! We brought one out to the truck and tested it out…

Bingo! With a very satisfying click, the plug popped right into place, it was a perfect fit!

If you are interested in doing this hack yourself, the hole is 3/8” in diameter. We found that McMasterCarr part number 85985K14 locking panel plug fits perfectly. This would also be an excellent problem to solve with 3d printing. If you just want an easy way to grab one or two, they are available in our store as well.
